Two wound care specialists from the Centre of Orthopaedics Pretoria recently participated in the Heart for the Wounded Conference.
As a wound care practitioner, I believe that learning never stops. Every patient teaches us something new, and every opportunity to learn from fellow healthcare professionals strengthens the care we provide. It was therefore a privilege to attend the HEART FOR THE WOUNDED conference on 25 July 2026.
The conference brought together passionate clinicians, wound care specialists, and industry leaders who share one common goal: improving the lives of people living with wounds. Throughout the day, we explored the latest evidence-based practices, innovative wound care technologies, and holistic approaches that place the patient at the centre of care.
One of the most valuable take-home messages was the significance of looking beyond the wound itself. Successful wound healing necessitates treating the whole person by considering their physical health, emotional well-being, nutrition, mobility, and social circumstances. A patient-centred approach emphasises that healing is not merely about dressing wounds; it is about restoring dignity, independence, and quality of life.
The conference also highlighted the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration. When healthcare professionals work together and share their expertise, patient outcomes improve significantly. These conversations and shared experiences continue to inspire us to raise the standard of wound care in our own communities.
Attending events such as the HEART FOR THE WOUNDED conference reminds me why I chose this profession. Wound care is constantly evolving, and staying current with the latest research and best practices ensures that our patients receive the highest standard of evidence-based care.
